RECOGNIZING CORRECT TIMMING FOR KUMITE COMPETITION
ITKF / Masters Course Text Nr. 4 - 1 July 1998

1. Correct timing is clearly defined in Competition Rules

2. Recognized execution of correct timing is as follows:
   1. Catching opponent during general movement. 
   2. Sensing and reacting early to opponents technique; early counter-attack delivered before opponent attacks. (SEN)
   3. Catching opponent during his delivery of technique.
      Remark: counter-attack after or at same time of uke, sabaki or kawashi
   4. Catching opponent between techniques or body movements.
   5. Catching opponent when his mind is stuck on previous technique - a gap of attention before next technique or movement. 
   6. Catching opponent when his mind is suddenly distracted or unfocused. 
   7. Catching opponent when mind is distracted or body is suddenly out of balance. 
      
      Remarks:
      1. If opponent has no reaction or fails to block attack, then scoring point is upgraded (WAZA-ARI technique to IPPON, little less than WAZA-ARI technique becomes WAZA-ARI)
      2. If opponent ignores an upcoming technique completely, then any counter-technique is not recognized as scoring.
